Tottenham 4-3 Man Utd: Michael Brown on Spurs’ quest for silverware

The “most important thing” for Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is winning a trophy, former Spurs midfielder Michael Brown has said.

Postecoglou’s side reached the Carabao Cup semi-final with a chaotic 4-3 win over Manchester United, although he had to field a makeshift defender with Djed Spence at left-back and Archie Gray at left. center back.

“It’s to Spurs’ credit that they hung on given the lack of depth they had – but they made some key errors when they were cruising, almost on show,” Brown told the BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast.

“That’s how they play under Ange Postecoglou. But they were very light on the bench and Manchester United were able to make a lot of changes to bring in experienced players.

“Postecoglou’s team was depleted of youngsters who have now gained experience. The injury list is long and when some of them return we hope to see an improvement in their consistency.

“The most important thing for him is to try and win a trophy. The fans want silverware. The stadium and the training ground are incredible but it’s the next step and hopefully it will be that year.

“We can see the potential for a positive result for Spurs, they just need to get rid of this inconsistency.

“It was just an incredible game of football. There was real quality, let’s not just throw it all at the goalkeepers. United brought some excellent counter-attacking football.

“We were treated to a magnificent cup encounter that we will not forget for a long time.”
