Biden administration abandons plan for mass student loan forgiveness in final days of term

President Joe Biden’s administration on Friday withdrew plans to forgive massive amounts of student loans, walking back one of the administration’s biggest promises just a month before the president is scheduled to leave office.

The Department of Education’s plans to cancel millions of student debts have been derailed. multiple legal challenges over the years, and its first attempt to cancel student loans using emergency powers related to the Covid-19 pandemic was even blocked by the Supreme Court last year.

The department announced in a statement Friday that it was canceling two of its major pending proposals, including one that was blocked by a federal judge after a coalition of conservative attorneys general continued administration.

Department officials cited “operational challenges” in trying to implement both rules in their reasoning, but maintained the legality of the plan. according to Politico. They also said they want to prioritize “helping at-risk borrowers successfully return to repayment” for the remainder of the term.

The notice arrives the same day the administration announcement it had canceled an additional $4.28 billion in student debt relief for about 55,000 public workers.

“Four years ago, the Biden-Harris administration committed to America’s teachers, service members, nurses, first responders and other public servants to fix the broken Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, and I am proud to say that we delivered,” Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a statement.

The new loan forgiveness brings the total amount of student loan relief under the administration to nearly $180 billion for 4.9 million borrowers.
