Sudbury news: Two people arrested for attempted murder after shooting at Notre Dame Avenue grocery store

Two men, including a young offender, were arrested Thursday evening after a shooting at a grocery store on Notre-Dame Avenue in Sudbury.

Greater Sudbury Police said officers responded to a firearms complaint at 7:30 p.m.

“Information provided indicates that two individuals approached a man in the self-checkout and one of the individuals shot the man,” police said in a statement Friday morning.

“All individuals involved fled, including the man who was shot. The 31-year-old man was hospitalized and treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries.”

One of the suspects, aged 22, was located at the scene and arrested.

“However, it was determined that the individual was not the shooter,” police said.

“According to information obtained during the investigation, officers went to a residence on Baker Street. Upon arrival at the residence, officers saw an individual matching the description of the shooter outside. »

The suspect immediately fled when he saw police, but was located by the canine unit and taken into custody.

“Officers also recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the incident,” police said.

The 17-year-old suspect was charged with attempted murder, violating conditions of release and numerous weapons-related charges.

The young man was taken into custody overnight and will appear in bail court on Friday.

The second suspect was also charged with attempted murder, as well as obstructing police and knowing unauthorized possession of a firearm.

He was taken into custody overnight and will also be in bail court on Friday.

“This is a targeted incident as the individuals involved are likely known to each other,” police said.

“We would like to recognize and commend our officers and members of the 911 Emergency Communications Center for their quick and coordinated response to a high-risk situation where two dangerous and violent offenders were arrested and charged.”
