Ethiopia and Kenya boost renewable energy sharing with electric highway

Date

(MENAFN) Ethiopia produces all energy for its internal grid of renewable and is home to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Africa’s largest hydroelectric power station. In Kenya, renewable energy accounts for around 90% of electricity, and the country has one of the largest geothermal installations in the world, in the Olkaria region.

But relying on renewable energy can be difficult: electricity cannot always be generated when needed (a drought may not produce hydropower) and renewable energy is difficult to store. A solution? The Ethiopia-Kenya Electric Highway.

This vast infrastructure was officially inaugurated the previous year, after ten years of work and 1.2 billion dollars of investment. Recently, when one country needs more electricity for its national grid and the other has a surplus, the electricity automatically crosses the border, via 650 miles of transmission lines, to ensure that supply meets on demand.

Last week, a Kenya-Tanzania connection was commissioned, which will also allow electricity to cross that border.
