TENNESSEE HISTORICAL COMMISSION AWARDS $2 MILLION IN HISTORIC PRESERVATION GRANTS

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Historical Commission announces the award of 23 matching grants totaling $2 million from the Historic Property/Land Acquisition Fund (HPLAF) program. These grants, which come from real estate transfer tax growth funds that have been allocated to the Commission, will be used to fund historic restoration and rehabilitation projects on Tennessee National Register properties that are of public interest.

“This new state grant program is an important part of our mission to revitalize historic places across Tennessee,” said Patrick McIntyre, Tennessee State Historic Preservation Officer and Executive Director of the Commission. Historic Tennessee, adding “from historic courthouses to museums, this program helps a variety of centuries-old landmarks that make our communities unique.”

This year’s grants include a wide variety of historical and architectural projects, all listed below. The grant program requires a 10% match of project funds from the grantee and is intended for properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places that also have a strong public engagement component, such as museums, palaces justice and libraries. These projects meet the goals and objectives of the Tennessee Historical Commission’s Historic Preservation Plan.

$54,000 for the restoration of Webb public school

Carter County
Town of Elizabethton
$100,000 for U.S. Post Office window repairs

Coffee County
Coffee County Historical Society
$150,000 to restore the main entrance to the Coffee County Courthouse
$12,000 for the restoration of stained glass windows at Lindsley Avenue Church of Christ

Fentress County
Alvin C. York State Historic Park
$100,000 to restore the Honeymoon House

Gibson County
$150,000 to restore Gibson County Courthouse porch

Grainger County
$100,000 to restore the old Grainger County Jail

Greene County
Blue Springs Historical Association, Inc.
$75,000 for exterior restoration of Blue Springs Lutheran Church

Grundy County
Wild Gulf State Park
$45,000 for a trail improvement project

Hamilton County
National Park Partners
$150,000 for structural restoration of Brown’s Ferry Tavern

Haywood County
Brownsville Christ Church
$100,000 to restore the steeple of Zion Church, Christ Church Brownsville
Temple Adas Israel
$100,000 to repair the stained glass windows of Temple Adas Israel

Hawkins County
Rogersville Heritage Association
$100,000 to restore Rogers Tavern

Henry County
Paris Henry Departmental Heritage Center
$31,000 to replace the roof of Cavitt Place

Humphreys County
Johnsonville State Historic Area
$65,000 to remove dangerous trees throughout the earthworks

Jefferson County
Bethel Presbyterian Church
$50,000 to restore Bethel Presbyterian Church

Lincoln County
Fayetteville-Lincoln County Museum
$135,000 to replace the roof of the Lincoln County Museum, Borden Powdered Milk Factory

$55,000 to restore windows at Beth Salem Presbyterian Church

Monroe County
$43,000 for an exterior restoration of the Monroe County Courthouse

Roane County
Roane County Heritage Commission
$125,000 to restore the Roane County Courthouse

Shelby County
Memphis Junior League
$40,000 for the restoration of the Boyce-Gregg house

Sullivan County
$70,000 to replace the cedar shingle roof of Anderson Townhouse

Williamson County
The Williamson County Heritage Foundation
$150,000 for the restoration of the Winstead house
