VINCI wins contract to modernize and expand wastewater treatment facilities in Canberra, Australia

Icon Water, water and sanitation service provider in the Australian Capital Territory, has awarded the contract to modernize and extend the control center to Seymour Whyte and VINCI Construction Grands Projets, both subsidiaries of VINCI Construction. of Lower Molonglo water quality. It is Australia’s largest inland wastewater treatment infrastructure, having been in operation since the late 1970s in Canberra.

On this AUD 385 million (€236 million) contract, the joint venture will work in a collaborative design and build approach – alongside engineering firm BECA HunterH2O – to build a new wastewater treatment plant to to increase the capacity of the existing factory.

The project will build a new membrane bioreactor with a capacity to treat 97 megaliters (ML) of wastewater per day, using innovative membrane treatment technology.

The joint venture is committed to implementing a wide range of measures to protect the environment, including:

  • use low-carbon concrete mixes to reduce carbon emissions;
  • reuse 90% of materials on site;
  • supply its site office with 100% renewable energy;
  • use 100% recycled water for construction activities.

The project is the first in a 10-year program of works and is expected to start in 2025 and employ up to 250 people at its peak. It will improve the plant’s treatment capacity and improve wastewater treatment services for the Canberra community.
