The Bangladesh Coast Guard is on high alert to prevent any attempt by Rohingyas to infiltrate the country in view of the current situation in Myanmar, the force’s director general, the Rear Admiral Ziaul Haque.

“Rohingyas are trying to enter Bangladesh as Teknaf and Saint Martin Island are close to the Bangladesh-Myanmar border and a tense situation prevails in Myanmar. Bangladesh Coast Guard is active to prevent any infiltration of Rohingyas by this river route Our patrols on the Naf river are in full swing,” said the DG.

The Director-General made the remarks while visiting the Bangladesh-Myanmar border at Teknaf and Saint Martin Island and distributing warm clothes to destitute people living in Shah Parir Dwip on Wednesday.

“Rohingyas are failing to enter Bangladesh through the Naf river. Besides, we are preventing Rohingyas who are trying to infiltrate through the border. Rohingyas are basically trying to reach here through middlemen,” the DG added.

The Coast Guard DG called on the local population to remain vigilant to prevent Rohingyas from entering Bangladeshi territory.

Stating that the Bangladesh Coast Guard is working round the clock to ensure security, the Director General termed the ongoing conflict in Myanmar as an internal matter.

“A long-standing conflict between Burmese junta forces and the Arakan Army has intensified, with the junta forces currently facing defeats. Continued shooting in Myanmar has spread fear among those living near the border. However, there is no need to panic. The Coast Guard stands ready to ensure the safety and security of border residents,” the director general said.

Regarding border visits, the DG further said that Bangladesh Coast Guard strives to ensure safety and develop the quality of life of coastal residents.

“This is why the Coast Guard deserves the praise of coastal populations. We need to increase the strength of the force to manage these programs effectively,” he added.
