6 vehicle thefts reported on Staten Island from October 21 to 27: here’s where

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Six vehicle thefts were reported during the week of October 21-27 on Staten Island.

Overall, the number of auto thefts reported in the borough for the year through Oct. 27 was down 24% (289 from 380) compared to the same period in 2023, according to the Latest CompStat numbers from the NYPD.

The database shows six cars were reported stolen on Staten Island between Oct. 21 and Oct. 27, the most recent week for which statistics are available.

Here is an overview of these incidents:

— On Oct. 21 at 11 a.m., a carjacking was reported at Bement and Castleton avenues in West Brighton.

— On October 22 at 5 p.m., a carjacking occurred at the intersection of Poland Place and Todt Hill Road in Castleton Corners.

— On October 24 at 8 a.m., a carjacking was reported at the intersection of Richmond Terrace and Heberton Avenue in Port Richmond.

— On October 26 at 2 p.m., a carjacking was reported on Lafayette Avenue and Van Buren Street in New Brighton.

— On October 27 at 9 a.m., a carjacking occurred at the intersection of Houston Street and Houston Lane in Graniteville.

— On the same day, in the evening, at 7 p.m., a car theft was reported on Burgher Avenue and Adele Street in Dongan Hills.

A drastic change in NYPD strategy has led to an overall decrease in crime, following an increase in 2023 on Staten Island. The NYPD adopted a tactical shift in late summer 2023, developing a complex, multi-state system for gathering and analyzing intelligence as a strategy for cracking down on car thefts and burglaries in particular. Deputy Chief Joseph Gulotta, former commander of the NYPD’s Staten Island precinct, told the Advance/SILive.com in an interview last December.
