An affordable housing project is under construction in northeast Calgary.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Whitehorn Friday morning.

Groundbreaking has taken place on the development of a new affordable housing complex in northeast Calgry.

The Homespace Society project will see the construction of transitional townhouses for 52 vulnerable families.

There will be two and three bedroom units in seven buildings.

The units will be made available to families experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. They will be rented at 30 percent below market rates.

The development is part of the city’s housing strategy that council approved in 2023, after a two-day public hearing in which more than 100 Calgarians shared their housing challenges.
