Agatha All Along: How did Agatha obtain the Darkhold? Nicholas Scratch Theory Explained

Agatha All Along’s finale tied up a lot of loose ends, but the question remains how the main character got her hands on the Darkhold in the first place. (Warning: spoilers ahead!)

The journey on the Witches’ Road was long and tragic, leaving Agatha throughout fans with as much sorrow as hope for the future. We finally got to see Agatha’s son Nicholasas well as a tease for Billy’s continued search for Tommy.

But there was one thing Marvel Show never ended up confirming, and that’s how it is Agatha has gotten his hands on the Darkhold, the powerful book of ancient spells. It is the deadliest of black magic, and many hoped to know how it came into his possession.

The show didn’t give a clear answer, but there were still plenty of clues that could have already provided one.

The Origin of the Darkhold Still Unconfirmed in the MCU

Agatha’s possession of the Darkhold is still a mystery, as neither WandaVision nor Agatha All Along have revealed how she got her hands on the powerful book.

To recap, the Darkhold was first revealed in WandaVision. Agatha had control of it, allowing her to manipulate and avoid Wanda’s powers. Wanda soon steals the Darkhold, and a post-credits scene in the series shows her studying it.

In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Wanda uses the book to learn more about the multiverse. She wants to harness her powers to locate her children, Billy and Tommy. After realizing her evil nature, Wanda then destroys all variants of the Darkhold, thereby committing suicide.

The Darkhold then reappeared in Agatha All Along, notably in a traumatic vision experienced by Agatha. Seeing the Darkhold in place of a baby in a cradle, it was assumed that she had traded her son Nicholas for the book, portraying her as a selfish and manipulative figure.

However, it later turned out that this was not the case at all. By episode 9, Agatha’s heartbreaking story had been fully explored, revealing that his son had been taken away by death (Rio) after he was supposed to die in childbirth.

Although the show hasn’t actually confirmed how she obtained the book, some theories suggest that Nicholas was somehow involved in the exchange. And if that’s true, it might just complicate Agatha’s moral situation even more.

Darkhold Theories Explained

The biggest theory regarding the Darkhold is that Agatha could have made a deal to get it in exchange for her child – but then changed her mind after becoming pregnant.

Of course, there may be another explanation given later for Agatha’s possession of the Darkhold. But if there is still a connection to be made within Agatha All Along, then it is most likely linked to Nicholas Scratch.

Even if those rumors about Agatha trading her son for the Darkhold turned out to be false (Agatha really wanted to keep Nicholas), perhaps she made her offer earlier.

It is possible that Agatha made a deal with Death (or another entity) to exchange the life of her firstborn for the Darkhold. However, when she became pregnant, she changed her mind and decided to keep her baby, whom she already loved.

So when Death arrived during childbirth, she begged for her life, getting more time in exchange. In the end, Death would still come for Nicholas six years later, as it was.

If Agatha had made a deal for the Darkhold before giving birth, that could explain why Death came to take Nicholas away in the first place.

This theory seems to be the strongest among fans. As a Reddit user wrote: “I assumed she made a deal long before her son was born that her firstborn’s life would be lost in exchange for the Darkhold. So Rio was just showing up to collect a debt.

“I assume she made a deal with Death before or during pregnancy, and regretted it during childbirth, leading her to beg Death not to take it,” he said. writes another. “That’s why Death was saying ‘Sorry, I can only give you some time’ as in ‘the deal is done, I’m going to have to take the kid at some point.’ Then, after Nicky’s death, Agatha recovers the Darkhold from this off-screen transaction.

However, another theory revolves around Agatha obtaining the Darkhold. After Nicholas died, either in an attempt to bring him back or to ensure that she never has to meet him in the afterlife.

This is one of her greatest fears, so it makes sense that she would seek this power to give her the advantage. Likewise, it could have been an act of revenge, seeking black magic to bring him back or overcome his grief and anger.

The only problem with both theories is that we never actually see her get the Darkhold in Agatha All Along or WandaVision, so the MCU may have an idea of the origin of the Darkhold.

If Scarlet Witch gets a solo movie (as many hope), then we can get a full explanation from Agatha herself.
