South Shields beat Halifax to reach Adobe Women’s FA Cup second round

South Shields produced a penalty shootout victory over FA Women’s National League side Halifax to reach the second round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

The Level 5 team came from behind in the 90th minute to force penalties and prevail.

Halifax had already come from behind twice to equalize after an Ashley Townsend brace for Shields, before taking the lead in the 80th minute.

It looked like the Tier 3 side were set for victory before Ellie White found the equalizer for the hosts, with Eve Gatens finding the back of the net in the fifth penalty round to send South Shields into the second round with style.

Peterborough also beat higher-ranked side Billericay Town to seal their place in the second round.

Billericay led 2-1 after goals from Abi Smith and Maddie Biggs, but an injury-time goal from Niamh Reynolds sent the sides to a tense shootout, with Posh emerging victorious.

Elsewhere, Watford beat fellow Southern Premier Division side AFC Wimbledon on penalties and Lewes also beat Dulwich Hamlet in a shootout.

There were dominant performances for Ipswich Town and Burnley who both put their names in the hat for the second round.

Ipswich put 12 goals past MK Dons to continue their impressive scoring streak, scoring six goals in the opening half hour at the Martello Ground.

Burnley also scored 12 against Spennymoor Town as Huddersfield Town secured a 7-0 victory over Nantwich Town.

Saltdean United made history with a 2-1 victory over South London as goals from Kirsty Barton and Georgia Bridges sent the team into the second round for the first time.

Royston Town and Kidderminster Town also reached the second round for the first time in their history with victories.

Accrington Stanley secured a 1-0 victory over Rossington Main to seal progress as Lily West produced a fine performance for Chester-le-Street United to send them past Curzon Ashton.

West scored four goals before booking a place for the Tier 6 team in the next round.

After a successful day in the FA Women’s National League last Sunday, Northampton Town lost 3-2 to Shrewsbury Town as six-time FA Cup winners Doncaster Rovers Belles lost in a 2-1 defeat to St Helens.
