Oilers vs. Penguins NHL Predictions, Picks and Odds

The Edmonton Oilers are overdue for a positive regression on offense, and it will come against a Pittsburgh Penguins team that couldn’t stop a beach ball.

The Pittsburgh Penguins suck on defense and the Edmonton Oilers can’t buy a goal.

My Penguins vs Oilers predictions have Oil breaking through offensively tonight and taking care of business in regulation.

My analysis of the Oilers

THE Pittsburgh Penguins arrival at Rogers Place couldn’t come at a better time for those in difficulty Edmonton Oilers.

The Oilers are in the midst of a horrible stretch of puck luck to open the season, and there is too much talent jumping on the boards for the goal drought to continue. Edmonton has a serious statistical correction coming, with its 5-on-5 offensive numbers well below last year’s levels.

Statistical 2023-24 2024-25
CF% 55.2% 58.1%
G/60 2.9 1.57
xG/60 3.19 3.01
xGF% 57.1% 55.4%
HDSC/60 14.6 12.73
Team shooting percentage 8.81 4.81

Of course, there are also the power play issues. Edmonton posted a fourth-ranked 26.3 power play percentage last year, so I expect some positive regression before this year’s unsustainable 10.5 PP%.

Back to the Pens, they have allowed the second most goals per game (4.25) and have not been good at 5v5 while allowing the third most goals per 60 (3.73) and the fifth most expected goal per match. 60 (3.06).

Parlay in the same Oilers vs Penguins game (SGP)

Oilers -1.5 puck line

Viktor Arvidsson More than 0.5 points

Zach Hyman Over 3.5 shots

The Oilers’ gifted winger Viktor Arvidsson a top six and power play time, and he failed to record a point in seven games. Arvidsson is expected to play a role on the No. 1 power play unit, and he plans to continue skating with the star center Leon Draisaitl 5 against 5.

With the Penguins’ defensive deficiencies highlighted, Arvidsson is ready for a crisis-free night.

The first-year Oiler has been on the ice with a solid 3.1 expected goals per 60 at 5-on-5, but like the entire team, that only translates to 1.31 actual goals per 60, and Edmonton has a team shooting percentage of just 3.6%.

Zach Hyman saw his shooting per 60 at 5v5 drop to 6.41 this year after posting a mark of 10.31 last season. His 18.65 attempts per 60 is right in line with last year’s 18.1, so I expect his efficiency to even out sooner rather than later.

In addition to allowing bunch goals, the Pens allow the fourth-most shots per game (33.3). I also like Hyman sporting a dominant 61.7 Corsi For percentage at 5-on-5.
