Bullet holes found in Waiohiki homes as Hawke’s Bay police investigate five suspected gang-related shootings

A woman and her family in Waiohiki told Hawke’s Bay today the houses, 100 meters apart, were rammed at 4 a.m. on Sunday, even though no gang members were living in the houses.

“One of the houses is occupied by my 60-year-old aunt, who lives there while her house is still under construction after being damaged by Cyclone Gabrielle.

“These gang wars are getting out of control. Innocent people are being targeted, and they are the ones who will be harmed.”

A police spokesperson said there had been an increased police presence in affected communities in recent days to provide reassurance and investigation.

Hawke’s Bay response lead Senior Sergeant Caroline Martin said police believed the incidents were gang-related and were working to establish links between them.

So far, police have made four arrests and located and seized a number of firearms.

Martin said the high-visibility police presence in recent days was making a difference.

“Our officers are patrolling to provide support and comfort to members of our community, many of whom are understandably shaken by this criminal behavior.

“Hawke’s Bay Police will work tirelessly to hold offenders to account and ensure our people are safe and feel safe.

Police are asking the public if they see any suspicious activity at this time. Please call 111 with as much detail as possible.
