Here are Perry Haug’s responses to Discover Moose Jaw’s questions to all city council candidates:

Q: Why are you running for city council?

A: I am running for municipal office because I believe it is time to make a change in our city. Moose Jaw is not just a place; This is my home and I have deep roots here through my family and lifelong friendships. Like many other candidates, I wish the best for all the citizens of Moose Jaw. With new perspectives and innovative ideas, I look forward to being part of the board that represents your voice and works for the better of our community.

Q: Do you have experience in public service, community boards, or politics?

A: I have a background in business and community service that has shaped my understanding of the needs of the public. As a former owner of an income property and public-facing business, I know the importance of community engagement. I have also attended union meetings and understand the relevant policies and procedures. Although my direct political experience is limited, I bring over 14 years of experience as a boilermaker-welder. Additionally, I have dedicated over 20 years to serving the Moose Jaw community through children’s and couples ministries at Victory Church. This experience gave me valuable insight into the needs and concerns of our residents.

Q: Do you think experience matters in any way?

A: Experience matters, but it’s essential to think about what kind of experience matters. Although I have limited formal experience in politics, I can draw on a wealth of lived experience. I personally understand the impact of decisions made by council on our community – whether those decisions have been beneficial or whether they require us to adapt and make the best of the situation. New ideas often come from people with different perspectives, including those with less experience. Balancing diverse experiences can lead to the best outcomes for our community.

Q: What topic/political issue/incident was a tipping point for you?

A: The business tax issue was an important turning point for me because it directly affects our ability to attract and retain businesses in Moose Jaw. High business taxes can stifle local economic growth and deter potential investors from locating in our city. It is essential to create an environment that encourages investment and fosters entrepreneurship.

Additionally, the lack of affordable housing is a major concern. I believe we need to work with private developers and nonprofits to mobilize resources and create more affordable housing projects. This partnership can help ensure that all members of our community have access to safe and affordable living options. Addressing these interrelated issues is critical to the long-term prosperity and sustainability of Moose Jaw.

Q: What criticisms do you have, if any, of the policies you’ve seen over the last two or three years?

A: Over the past two to three years, many citizens of Moose Jaw have expressed the feeling that they do not have a voice in the policies that are passed. Opportunities for public participation and engagement have been limited. I believe council needs to prioritize transparency and accountability by improving communication with Moose Jaw residents. It is essential that our community feels heard and involved in the decision-making process.

Q: What is your proposed compromise/cooperation with your colleagues/council members to achieve your policy goals?

A: My plan for compromise and cooperation with other council members begins with actively listening to the citizens of Moose Jaw. Together, we can focus on common goals that align with community needs, fostering unity around a shared vision. I will encourage respectful dialogue and strive to resolve disagreements constructively, ensuring that a positive and collaborative work environment is maintained.

Q: What else do you want voters to know about you?

A: My heart is deeply rooted in Moose Jaw, the place we all call home. Although my formal experience in politics may be limited, I am committed to listening to the residents of Moose Jaw and advocating for the interests of our city. I will prioritize the needs and voices of our community, and my goal is to work collaboratively with the council to create a vibrant city that provides opportunity for everyone. Together we can build a better future for Moose Jaw.

Q: In the interest of transparency, are you an umbrella organization or do you share an association with other candidates in any way?

A: I know several candidates for city councilor and mayor, having lived in Moose Jaw for many years. We all share deep roots in our community and a passion for making Moose Jaw a better place. Even though we have relationships, neither of us collaborates for personal gain. We work side by side to advocate for positive changes in policies and procedures, prioritizing the public’s voices for the benefit of future generations.
