Vancouver mall shooting suspect makes first court appearance

The man who allegedly shot and killed a man and injured two others at a Vancouver shopping center last week appeared in court for the first time Monday.

Authorities release a probable cause affidavit that details the events leading up to the shooting and identifies the accused shooter as 32-year-old Travis Ward.

Ward was arrested Saturday for going to the Vancouver mall wearing a “Joker” mask, following a man to the food court and shooting him in the back of the head at close range, according to the document on the probable cause. The document can be read below:

The document states Ward entered the mall with three other people. Two women and a child dressed as a princess for the trick-or-treating event taking place at the time of the incident.

According to court documents, the women who were with the suspect did not know the shooting had occurred and officials said surveillance footage also did not indicate the women knew about the shooting. Other cheaters and parents ran and hid. adjacent store in the mall because they feared they were in an active shooter situation.

Officials say once Ward was in custody, he gave no indication of a motive for the attack.

The state said it plans to hold Ward without bail and filed a motion during today’s hearing. As Ward awaits his next court appearance on Nov. 7, he has also been ordered to have no contact with the two other victims of the shooting.
