Soft cheeses sold in stores like Aldi and Market Basket have been recalled due to their potential Listeria contamination, according to a notice from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published Monday.

Savencia Cheese USA, based in Pennsylvania, has recalled seven different soft cheese products, including Market Basket Brie 6/8 ounce (oz) and Aldi Emporium Selection Brie Cheese 12/8 oz.

The company said the recalled items have “limited regional distribution in the United States” and that the “few retailers” who have the potentially contaminated cheeses are currently working to remove them from shelves.

The FDA advisory does not specify which states may have received or sold these cheeses.

No illnesses have been reported so far, however, Listeria infections may be dangerous, especially to the elderly, young children, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women. In this last group, one Listeria infection – also called listeriosis– can sometimes lead to miscarriages or stillbirths.

In less serious cases, Listeria can cause intestinal diseases, including vomiting And diarrhea. Symptoms usually appear within a day of eating food contaminated with the bacteria and disappear within three days.

Savencia Cheese USA initiated the recall after routine testing at one of its manufacturing facilities found that some “on-site processing equipment may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.”

Again, although distribution of these cheeses was limited, the company said any consumers who purchased any of the recalled products should not eat them and should return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
