Together we can ensure justices of the peace serve with integrity

November 6, 2024

Dear editor,

I read with interest the recent article by Nicholas McDavid, JP, published on October 298, 2024, discussing the financial challenges faced by some Justices of the Peace (JPs) in Jamaica.

I commend him for drawing attention to this issue and I share his concern that justices of the peace may experience difficulties. Remarkable individuals who give of their time and talents to serve the public as justices of the peace uphold high standards of integrity and professionalism.

Regardless of their personal financial situation, Justices of the Peace must never compromise their role by soliciting or accepting payment for services, as this would erode the public trust essential to our mission.

Within the St Andrew Justices of the Peace Association (SAJPA), as with other associations, a welfare committee is dedicated to providing support to justices of the peace in need. Although there is currently no formal framework for health insurance or JP benefits, each association strives to respect and assist its members, thereby strengthening a community of care and accountability.

I encourage St Andrew’s Justices of the Peace to connect with SAJPA, identify colleagues who may need support and volunteer their time to strengthen our shared commitment to service. Together, we can ensure that every justice of the peace carries out their duties with integrity, consistent with our commitment to justice.

Norris Rhomes, J.P.

President

St Andrew Justices of the Peace Association
