Kamala Harris to Deliver Concession Speech After Trump Wins: What You Need to Know

Harris received at least 224 electoral votes, with results from swing states Michigan, Nevada and Arizona still outstanding. According to the White House, Harris will speak at 4 p.m. ET at Howard University in Washington DC., a historically black university and its alma mater.

The Harris campaign held an election night party Tuesday at the Howard University Yard, where the mood shifted from “festive to concerned” as calls for the race began to come in, according to the Associated Press.

Harris was expected to address election night, but her campaign co-chair, Cedric Richmond, said supporters would not hear from her until Wednesday. Multiple reports indicate she is expected to call on Trump to concede before speaking Wednesday afternoon.

Harris launched her White House bid just four months into the presidency. Joe Biden abandoned the race. She targeted the traditional Democratic base – African-Americans, Latinos and young people – but also sought to win over disaffected Republicans.

Concern about inflation was particularly high nationally, according to AP VoteCast, a large survey of more than 120,000 voters nationwide.

Voters generally thought Trump would be better equipped than Harris, Biden’s current vice president, to manage the economy and jobs. The key swing states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan largely reflect the nation’s mood, the survey found.

The AP’s VoteCast survey found that Trump attracted a small but significant share of younger voters, black voters and Hispanic voters — many of whom felt depressed about the economy. According to the survey, the majority of young Black and Latino voters said the economy was not performing well.
