Knoxville group will use grant to help veterans get health care

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – As Veterans Day approaches, a Knoxville group is working to improve access to health care for those who have served in the armed forces.

Interfaith Health Center is a nonprofit organization that strives to provide medical care, dental care, prescription assistance and more to people who need a little extra help getting care health.

The group’s latest initiative is aimed at veterans, thanks to a grant from the Trinity Health Foundation, Interfaith announced Thursday. The group received nearly $150,000, which it plans to use to Greeting Service – Bridging the Gaps for Veterans Health care Access project.

“America’s military personnel risk their lives to protect our country and our freedoms, but not all of our nation’s veterans have adequate access to health care once their service ends,” said Melissa Knight, executive director of the ‘InterFaith Health Center. “In fact, more than half of Tennessee veterans do not have government-funded TRICARE health insurance coverage, leaving many without health insurance coverage. InterFaith plans to help close this gap.

The project will focus on raising awareness, hosting events and more to provide care to veterans.
