One of the most important factors in President-elect Donald Trump’s landslide victory victory was his historic support from Hispanics. Almost single-handedly, Trump transformed the Republican Party into a multiracial working-class party.

According to NBC exit polls, Trump won 46% of Hispanic votes, a dramatic improvement from his 32% in 2020. He broke George W. Bush’s previous Republican record of 40% in 2004.

Trump won Hispanic men by 12 points. And he won the Florida Hispanic vote with 58 percent. Trump’s total in historically Democratic Starr County, Texas, which is 97% Latino, increased from 19% in 2016 to 57% in 2024.

Not even die-hard Republican supporters could have predicted this historic political realignment. Yet I have long argued that the Hispanic values of faith, family, hard work and entrepreneurship make them a natural GOP constituency.

In the words of Senator Ted Cruz, “our Hispanic communities are not just leaving the Democratic Party: they are returning to the conservative values they never left.”

Two years ago I wrote A book explaining how Hispanics are the biggest victims of government policy and benefit disproportionately from the free market. Nowhere has this thesis been more true than under the Trump and Biden-Harris administrations.

Consider this striking statistic: According to U.S. Census Bureau data, the real median income of Hispanic households increased by $6,500 between 2017 and 2019, 10 times faster than between 2021 and 2023 under Biden-Harris.

Hispanics ignored the campaign and mainstream media rhetoric calling Trump racist and focused on the results of those administrations when they voted.

Latinos have been on the front lines of the American economic and social decadence presided over by Biden-Harris. They have been particularly hard hit by historic inflation because they are less likely to hold assets.

High gas prices in recent years have also impacted Hispanics who often earn their living by commuting from job to job, unlike the elite laptop class who often work from home .

Hispanics are also more likely to live in working-class neighborhoods where high crime and public unrest have reduced quality of life. Shoplifters, vagrants, and menacing thugs generally do not venture into wealthy white suburbs. George Gascon, the pro-crime district attorney in the majority-Latino Los Angeles area, lost his re-election bid.

Cultural and religious issues were also important. Hispanics are religious and have been turned off by the left’s obsession with transgender issues. Trump’s closing ad, “Kamala’s agenda is ‘them, not you'” resonated with these voters.

The Republicans also benefited from popular support. The Job Creators Network Foundation launched the Hispanic Vote Coalition earlier this year to motivate Hispanics to vote for their values. We went to Hispanic areas in swing states with Spanish ads, media and materials aimed at small businesses, faith and community leaders. We found a receptive audience, ready to engage in policy issues and tired of being criticized and taken for granted by Democrats.

The question now is whether Republicans can consolidate and build on these gains among Hispanic voters. There is no doubt that the Democrats will make great efforts to win them back in the next elections.

To do this, Conservatives must continue to engage and reach this constituency with tailored messaging between election cycles, not just during them. We need a permanent infrastructure of Hispanic engagement to keep these voters part of our coalition for the long term.

The extent to which conservatives can achieve this will determine whether Trump’s multiracial, victorious Republican Party survives beyond his leadership. But for now, let’s welcome Hispanics to their new political home.
