A fundraising campaign for Gursimran Kaur, a 19-year-old Walmart employee who died trapped in a walk-in oven at one of the supermarket chain’s outlets in Canada, has raised more than Rs 1 crore. The GoFundMe campaign for Gursimran’s family was organized by the Maritime Sikh Society. The fundraiser initially stood at CAD 50,000 (over Rs 60.78 lakh), which was completed within hours of the launch. However, thanks to overwhelming support, the fundraising campaign almost doubled its originally set goal.

Gursimran worked at a Walmart store in Halifax, Canada, with his mother. According to the GoFundMe page, when Gursimran’s mother couldn’t find her on the ground on October 19, she became concerned and asked officials for help. Unfortunately, she discovered her daughter’s lifeless body, burned alive in the bakery oven.

“The female, who was an employee of the store, was found in a large walk-in oven belonging to the store’s baking department,” Halifax Regional Police said in a news release.

“It is important to note that the investigation has not yet reached the point where the cause and manner of death can be determined,” police added.

The cause and circumstances of death have yet to be discovered.
