Job Overview

The Emotional Chat Volunteer, also known as a Certified Listener, will provide emotional support on the online chat platform and support distressed and emotional chatters. As a certified listener, you are not a therapist and do not tell others what to do, and our volunteers do not provide crisis intervention or substance abuse counseling. Appropriate training will be provided before participating in support chats, and this is an opportunity to learn more life skills.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provide immediate and confidential support following agency procedures and policies
  • Provide early, real-time interventions to callers
  • Perform weekly shifts and report to Certified Auditor Coordinator
  • Collaborate with other volunteers and staff in a respectful and professional manner
  • Build relationships and have conversations through empathy and emotion on the online platform
  • Continuing training, development and team support

What will you NOT do?

  • Certified volunteer listeners are not therapists and do not claim to be.
  • Try to provide callers with mental health support or services
  • Telling people what to do or how they should live their lives
  • Provide crisis intervention or substance abuse counseling.

Qualifications and skills

  • Excellent communication skills and computer knowledge
  • Proficiency in the English language, specifically written
  • Ability to remain calm and collected in difficult situations
  • Be non-judgmental and accepting of the diverse values ​​and beliefs of others
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Access to reliable internet connectivity and a private workspace from home
  • Adherence to Certified Listeners Society Online Chat Policies, Procedures and Guidelines

Requirements

  • 18+ years
  • Have residency in Canada or the United States (e.g. Canadian citizenship, PR, work permit, work visa, etc.)
  • Two references (professional, academic or volunteer-related)
  • Police reference checks, including vulnerable sector checks
  • Successful completion of all comprehensive core skills training programs, quizzes and selection process
  • Reliable in meeting weekly commitments
  • Able to comply with Certified Listeners Society policies and procedures and our Code of Ethics.
  • Maintain a confidential workplace as well as the confidentiality of your work.
  • Sign and abide by our voluntary non-disclosure agreement.
  • Participate in continuing education and work-related development opportunities.
