A search for a person in Cape Cod Canal to Bourne continued into the afternoon of Friday, the State Police the media relations department confirmed.

The U.S. Coast Guard also participated in the search in the canal and Cape Cod Bay, and continued to search as the time approached 4 p.m., but local firefighters and police had cleared the scene by then, according to officials. Bourne Fire Department.

Acting State Police Media Relations Director Tim McGuirk said that as of 5 p.m., no one had been found. Earlier in the day, a state police helicopter unit and dive team were dispatched to conduct a search, but McGuirk could not confirm whether the person had jumped from the Sagamore Bridge or was simply swimming in the canal.

“It is not yet clear how the person entered the water,” he said around noon on Friday.

State police and Bourne Fire Department were on site Friday mid-morning. Local firefighters and police responders had left the scene by 3:30 p.m., according to the Bourne Fire Department.

THE Bourne Police Department referred questions to state police, whose jurisdiction includes the bridge.
