French Quarter fight turns into shooting, woman injured

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – A fight in the French Quarter escalated into a shooting early Friday morning near several bars, according to the NOPD.

Authorities said a woman was shot around 1 a.m. in the 600 block of Iberville Street, near Chartres Street.

Less than 24 hours after arriving in New Orleans, the Weigold family of Boston witnessed the violent incident from their Airbnb balcony in Iberville.

Cellphone video recorded by the family shows a violent fight breaking out in the street below.

“We’re just seeing this guy get blown up,” Zachary Weigold said. “There are maybe eight guys above him. We had a baton or a pipe.

In the video, someone is seen brandishing what appears to be a pipe and hitting another person. A woman comes out of the nearby Ghost Bar with a chair, which she throws at one of the people involved.

After picking up the chair and throwing it again, shots are fired, hitting her. The footage suggests the woman may have fought back.

“I just see a muzzle and I hear a gunshot, and my family and I just hit the bridge,” Weigold said. “My heart was beating a little. I’m like, ‘Oh, it happens, okay.’

Weigold estimates he heard at least 10 gunshots. Surveillance video from a nearby business shows police arriving minutes later to help the woman and secure the crime scene.

“I feel like the city is safe, but I also watch my back,” said New Orleans resident Evelyn Crawford. “I keep an eye on my surroundings and know what to watch out for. People need to trust their instincts if something is wrong.

Despite the scary experience, the Weigolds are still making the most of their trip.

“We are going to enjoy our second day here. Everything is going well and let’s keep it that way,” Weigold said.

Police are still searching for the suspect and have not publicly released further details. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact NOPD or CrimeStoppers.
