Flyers’ Owen Tippett finds his rhythm by scoring in back-to-back games. But will it last?

SUNRISE, Fla. – It’s getting a little streaky.

This is how the Flyers coach Jean Tortorella » described Owen Tippett after the striker scored for the second consecutive match. The goal came after a five-game goal drought, but it was his third in 14 games this season.

“When things are going well, it’s easy to feel confident and relax a little bit,” he said after the 2-1 shootout victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he also scored the winning goal in a one-on-one match. “I think the last couple of games it was just about playing a bit more freely and being happy to find the net a few times.”

Finding the net doesn’t necessarily mean scoring for Tippett. It should hit the rectangle measuring 72 inches wide and 48 inches high. According to MoneyPuck40.6% of his unblocked shots miss the net. He has 95 shot attempts and 38 shots on goal, giving him a shooting percentage of 7.9%.

“Yes, he misses the net a lot. I don’t know if it’s because he’s holding the stick. He misses the net a lot,” Tortorella said in Seattle before the Flyers’ fourth game of the season. “It’s something we constantly talk to him about, as far as we call it, that’s missing in net. But it’s just that you can’t be too good at what you do with it and it’s a roller coaster with him. And I’m not sure it will ever go away.

This may never completely go away – last season it missed the net 113 times with 89 pucks wide – but he’s hit the net more recently.

Since the Flyers’ 4-3 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 27, where he missed the net four times, he has sent just six shots high or wide over the next five games. During the same stretch, he had 14 shots on goal averaging over 17 minutes per game.

Through the first nine games of the season, his shooting percentage was 4.2% and he missed 20 shots – tied for second in the NHL with Tage Thompson of the Buffalo Sabres. Over the last five games, he has a shooting percentage of 14.3%.

“I think it’s just a matter of situation,” he said. “Obviously there are times when things open up and times when there are more guys up front. I think that’s just the way things are going right now.

There is no denying that the Flyers need more offense. Coming into Saturday, they are 27th in goals per game in the NHL (2.50), and it doesn’t help when you allow 3.64. They need to find some juice against a Florida Panthers team that is fifth in the league in goals per game (3.86) and has scored 30 during its six-game winning streak; they allowed 14 blocks in that stretch.

The Flyers have played better in the last two games. Aside from the victory in Tampa Bay, they nearly ended the Carolina Hurricanes’ six-game winning streak before succumbing at the last minute on Tuesday.

They’re starting to get their game back – and their connection. Maybe, just maybe, they’re turning a corner.

“In both zones, the neutral zone and the offensive zone, I think we are closer to the puck,” Tortorella said Friday in Fort Lauderdale after a quick practice.

“In our transition, I think we need to anticipate supporting plays a little better so we can stretch out and be able to slow them down. I think one of the biggest things we need to be consistent is to support teams, so we have some wiggle room to play with in the neutral zone, and that comes with the numbers. So inconsistent, but it’s getting better.

Breakaways

The Flyers did not hold a morning skate. Who will be the goalie is a big question mark. Ivan Fedotov could do it again after backstopping the Flyers to victory over Tampa Bay. Sam Ersson and Aleksei Kolosov are each dealing with lower-body injuries, but Ersson has been on the ice since Tuesday. Kolosov did not participate in the team’s practice Friday. …Defender Cam York can also potentially return. Placed on injured reserve on October 26 with an upper body injury, he skated with the team but wears a blue non-contact jersey. … Matvei Mishkovwho was healthy against the Lightning, is also another option to return to the lineup.
