Child Calls 911 After Parents Stabbed, Shot Each Other To Death On Halloween

An 11-year-old in Washington state called police on Halloween after his parents stabbed and shot themselves while playing video games in another room with headphones on.

On October 31, around 6:05 p.m. local time, the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call on Olympia Way in Longview, where they discovered a man and woman in the kitchen area of ​​their home who had “Succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene,” the office shared in a statement. release on Thursday, November 7.

Authorities and medics from Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue provided first aid, but were unsuccessful, according to the release. The married couple was later identified as Juan Antonio Alvarado Saenz, 38, and Cecilia Robles Ochoa, 39.

The next day, the CCSO wrote about Facebook that there was “no indication of a continuing threat to the public.” The Oregonian and local ABC affiliate KATU were among the first media outlets to break the news.

The couple’s 11-year-old child – who was “playing video games while using headphones” and “did not witness the altercation” – was the only other person in the house at the time of the fight , CCSO said.

The child then called the police after finding his injured parents, one of whom had been shot. After obtaining a search warrant, analyzing the scene and conducting interviews, authorities learned the couple was having “relationship problems” and “intent on separating.”

Alvarado Saenz died from multiple stab wounds to the chest, while Robles Ochoa died from gunshot and stab wounds, police said, citing autopsies.

Detectives discovered a knife and a gun – which were stolen from Alvarado Saenz’s employer – at the crime scene. The weapon “was not discovered to be missing until after this incident,” according to CCSO.

The sheriff’s office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for more information on Saturday, November 9.

“There is no evidence of third party involvement in this matter,” CCSO said in its statement. “The on-scene investigation and autopsy results indicate that both subjects were attacking each other, but investigators are unable to determine the primary aggressor.”
