Fifth person arrested in connection with violent Brampton protests

Peel Regional Police have arrested and charged a fifth person in connection with a series of violent protests that took place on the grounds of a Hindu temple in Brampton and spread to two other locations in Mississauga earlier this week.

On Saturday, police announced the arrest of Inderjeet Gosal, 35, of Brampton. He was accused of assaulting someone with a weapon and was granted parole. He is expected to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton at a later date.

Officers were first called to a large protest outside the Hindu Sabha Mandir on The Gore Road on Sunday 3 November. Videos circulating on social media appear to show protesters holding banners in support of a separate Sikh country called Khalistan clashing with others, including some holding banners. The national flag of India.

The videos appear to show fist fights and people hitting each other with sticks in what appears to be the compound surrounding the temple.

The group Sikhs for Justice said Khalistan supporters had protested the presence of Indian consulate officials making an announced visit to provide administrative services such as helping the elderly access pensions.

Four people were arrested, including a 57-year-old Toronto man charged with publicly inciting hatred, and an off-duty Peel police officer was suspended for his participation in the protest.

In response to recent events, the Indian consulate in Toronto announced that it was suspending some of its diplomatic visits to process paperwork at places like religious temples.

The violence further increased tensions between Canada and India following the expulsion of six Indian diplomats in October when the RCMP flagged them as persons of interest in alleged crimes against Canadians.

Peel Regional Police have launched a strategic investigation team that is analyzing hundreds of videos of the clashes to identify additional suspects.

“We want to remind the public that complex investigations like these take time and that individuals are arrested as they are identified and in no specific order,” the department said in a statement.

Authorities say they expect more arrests.
