Arne Slot has dismissed claims his players took extra motivation from Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion as Liverpool beat Aston Villa 2-0 to take their match into extra time. Premier League lead to five points.

Objectives of Darwin Nuñez And Mohamed Salah were enough to send Slot’s side further away from Pep Guardiola’s men, who have now lost four consecutive games in all competitions for the first time under their Catalan coach.

He was asked if his players and the home fans were more encouraged by this result at the Amex Stadium ahead of the 8pm kick-off at AnfieldSlot said his team certainly didn’t need any extra motivation to perform, despite the fact they will now sit at the top of the table going into the November international break with a good advantage.

“(It doesn’t get better) because of the first reason you say”, the Liverpool manager said. “If you win, most of the time it doesn’t get better and if you win the number of games we do you can be ahead, it’s not safe yet in this league because Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City ; all these teams are capable of winning so many games and that is what they have shown in recent seasons.

“And then a win against a very good team like Villa, who have done so well in recent years, is always important. I can’t tell you how the fans felt (about the Man City defeat). I I can only tell you that if my players needed additional motivation following a result on another pitch, it would not be a good idea.

“If you’re playing at Anfield in front of your own fans you always have to be motivated and that’s what they’ve been since I’ve been here now and in previous years.

“You shouldn’t need the motivation of another match and that’s certainly not what I felt today with the players. With the supporters, maybe it’s different, I don’t know not. You should ask them.”

Liverpool return to action later this month with a trip to Southampton on Sunday November 24. The day before, City hosts Tottenham Hotspur.
