Will the Giants fire Brian Daboll? Best coaching candidates to replace him

play

THE New York Giants are facing another losing season and are about to face a tough question about the future of their franchise during the 2025 NFL offseason.

Should the team give the duo of head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen another season to work things out, or is it time for new leadership?

Daboll took the Giants to the playoffs in his first year as head coach with a 9-7-1 record and was named AP Coach of the Year for his efforts. Since then, New York hasn’t performed as well, and quarterback Daniel Jones — who Schoen rewarded with a four-year, $160 million contract after the 2022 NFL season — has particularly struggled.

This has led to widespread speculation that Daboll and Schoen could get the start, although Giants owner John Mara has called for patience with both.

“Obviously, we’re all very disappointed with where things are right now,” Mara said Oct. 27 at the start of an NFL Films production about his father, Wellington Mara, according to CBS Sports. “But I will say one thing: We are not making any changes this season and I don’t plan on making any changes this offseason either.”

Of course, NFL owners have been known to change course. Mara could decide to part ways with Daboll if he sees him as part of the problem, although the most likely scenario makes Jones the scapegoat for the Giants’ offensive struggles.

Who could the Giants target if Mara decides to end the Daboll era? There are plenty of candidates that could intrigue the Giants, including one of the greatest coaches in NFL history.

Bill Belichick

Belichick seems likely to look to return to the NFL in 2025 after spending the 2024 season working various media jobs, and the Giants are a natural fit for him. The longtime Patriots coach has deep ties to the Giants organization, spending the 1979-90 seasons with the team and eventually becoming its defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells.

Could this be enough to convince Mara to hire Belichick? Maybe, especially given the Giants owner’s avowed preference for long-term coaching stability. The only question is whether Belichick, 72, would get the most out of a team still searching for its franchise quarterback or whether the veteran coach would produce a record similar to the one he has had over of his career without Tom Brady (85-102).

Ben Johnson

Johnson has been one of the hottest coaching candidates in recent hiring cycles. He was rumored to be among the top candidates for several positions in 2024 before deciding to return to Detroit.

“I like what we’ve built here, starting with the ownership, the head coach, the general manager,” Johnson explained of his decision, according to NFL.com. “We have a great group of guys in the locker room and I want to reap the rewards with them for a little while longer.”

That said, Johnson plans to leave the Lions at some point. The 38-year-old may be waiting for the right opportunity to do so. Maybe it would come to New York, where Johnson could focus on bringing in a young quarterback in the same way that Jared Goffwho became one of the NFL’s most accurate quarterbacks under Johnson’s tutelage.

Bobby Slowik

Slowik, 37, is another of the promising, offensive-minded coaching candidates who hopes to eventually find a job. He helped CJ Stroud producing one of the best rookie seasons in NFL history – Stroud completed 63.9 percent of his passes for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns and five interceptions – in his first season as offensive coordinator. Things haven’t been as smooth in 2024, but Slowik has helped the Texans go 6-3 despite injuries to the team’s top two receivers.

Slowik was part of Washington’s legendary 2013 staff under Mike Shanahan and most recently worked under two successful NFL head coaches, Kyle Shanahan and DeMeco Ryans. The Giants should see upside with Slowik and could view him as the ideal candidate to develop whatever quarterback they choose to succeed Jones.

Kingsbury Cliff

The downside to hiring Kingsbury is that he already held the position of Arizona Cardinals head coach. He achieved modest success with an 11-6 season in 2021, but saw the wheels fall off quickly, ending his four-year tenure with a 28-37-1 record and with two offenses ranked below the league average in scoring and yards per game. .

The advantage? Kingsbury is only 45 years old and is considered a brilliant offensive mind. He also built an attack that allowed Jayden Daniels for a smooth transition to the NFL, as the No. 2 overall pick went 7-2 while completing 71.5 percent of his passes for 1,945 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions.

Kingsbury’s spread offense is considered quarterback-friendly, particularly for young quarterbacks transitioning to the NFL. If the Giants draft a young signal-caller, they could view Kingsbury as the ideal candidate to build a functional offense around him, especially early in the quarterback’s career. That, plus the prospect of poaching Kingsbury from a division rival, should put him in play for the Giants.

Todd Monken

Monken, 58, returned to the NFL in 2023 after spending three years at Georgia and transformed the Ravens’ offense from a run-heavy attack to a balanced attack. The 58-year-old likes to use a vertical passing attack, and it suits playmakers like Lamar Jackson, Zay Flowers And Mark Andrews GOOD. Its ability to integrate – and rejuvenate – Derrick Henri in 2024 has given Baltimore one of the best offenses in the NFL as it looks to make the Super Bowl.

The Giants have a few weapons, mainly Malik Naberswho could fit perfectly into Monken’s offense. He might even be able to get the most out of the 2023 third-round speedster Jalin Hyattso his ability to build a quality passing game around New York’s next quarterback would make him an instant candidate for the Giants head coaching job.

Liam Coen

Many believed Mayfield Baker would take a step back in 2024 after losing offensive coordinator Dave Canales, hired to coach the team. Carolina Panthers. Instead, Mayfield continued to play at a high level, leading the NFL with 23 passing touchdowns in nine weeks and looking like all the elements of a quality NFL starter.

Coen deserves a lot of credit for this. The 38-year-old disciple of Sean McVay brought the principles of the Rams coach’s highly successful offense to the Buccaneers, and the pre-snap move allowed Mayfield to have receivers wide open consistently throughout the season. This offensive plan should make Coen a hot commodity and an attractive option for the G-Men.

Brian Flores

Flores is one of the game’s most brilliant defensive minds and has transformed Minnesota’s defense from a laughing stock to an opportunistic takeaway machine. His defensive scheme – which involves blitzing often and bringing many players to the line of scrimmage before leaving some in coverage – is difficult for quarterbacks to read, and he does an excellent job by adapting its most talented players into roles that match their skills.

The Giants would likely drool over the idea of adding Flores, 43, to coach a stopping unit that already has the makings of a top-tier defense in Brian Brule, Kayvon Thibodeaux And Dexter Laurent. This is partly why they interviewed the former Miami Dolphins coachwho posted a 24-25 record in his three years in Miami, in 2022 before hiring Daboll.

The only question is whether New York would be willing to hire a defensive-minded coach as it looks to replace Jones or whether it would prefer to go the offensive route.

Jesse Minter

Minter is another young defensive coach who has done an outstanding job with the Chargers defense. In 2024, the Chargers ranked 28th in yards allowed and 24th in points allowed. This year, they ranked eighth in yards allowed and have the best defense in the NFL heading into Week 10.

How did Minter do it? The 41-year-old has simply attracted players like Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa, Derwin James and more to play up to their talent level. The Chargers have always had a solid defense on paper, but it never came together under Brandon Staley.

Still, NFL teams will take note of what Minter has accomplished, especially considering the success of his college defense at Michigan under Jim Harbaugh. This should earn Minter a few interviews, and the Giants should at least give one of the best young defensive minds in the game a shot.
