Not winning the Stanley Cup will ‘always bother’ former Bruins goaltender

BOSTON- Linus Ullmark accomplished a lot during his three years within the Boston Bruins. But even a 40-win season and a Vezina Trophy weren’t the Ottawa Senators goaltender’s end goal.

“I wouldn’t say we accomplished anything,” Ullmark said after the Senators win 3-2 in overtime against the Bruins on Saturday night. “We didn’t win and that’s always going to bother me. I really thought we had opportunities to do that. So, I’m going to bring those feelings, thoughts (and) emotions with me into this locker room and strive to become better and learn from my mistakes.

Boston reached the playoffs in each of Ullmark’s three seasons, but never reached the ultimate goal. He only appeared in one playoff game last year after Jeremy Swayman became the Bruins’ number one goaltender.

Ulmark was traded to the Senators in June and made his return to TD Garden like a member of the Ottawa Senators.

In eight games this season, the goalie is 3-4-0 with a 2.87 goals-against average and a .890 save percentage. And while he’s had a slow start with his new team, Ullmark believes he’s made progress as a goaltender from his time in Boston to Ottawa thanks to strong leaders.

“In my mind, I consider myself a much better goalie, to be quite frank,” he said. “What I’ve learned over the years, through the type of leadership we have in this organization, is how to behave as a professional, but also as a human being. So, I carry that with me.

The Senators have used 17 starting goaltenders since last making the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2017 and could be a key factor in helping Ottawa return to the playoffs. Ullmark called Saturday’s win over his former team a “declared” victory, and he played a big role in helping the Senators to victory with a huge save on Elias Lindholm in overtime that ultimately allowed Brady Tkachuk to score the winning goal.

Ullmark has received plenty of praise from his teammates – especially after Saturday’s win that ended a two-game losing streak – and Saturday’s victory could go a long way to boost Ullmark’s confidence and help Ottawa to do a little errand.
