Serangoon Garden Market Named SG’s Favorite Retail Hub, Netizens Disagree

When you think of Singapore’s famous hawker centers, Serangoon Garden Market maybe it’s not the first one that comes to mind.

However, last week at the Singapore Hawkers Seminar and Awards, it was crowned Singapore’s favorite hawker centre.

He received 216 votes out of more than 500 from the public.

The food center houses famous stalls including Aliff Nasi Lemak, Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle and Ah Seng Braised Duck.

According to a report from CNAthe place is so popular that people come “from all over the island to eat”. Diners surveyed also said they liked the food center for its diverse dining options and “open-air” structure.

The toilets at the food center were also described as “first class”.

However, it seems many netizens don’t believe the hype behind the Serangoon Garden Market.

Some demanded to know how the public vote went, while others said they had “never been there.”

Some also called the place “inaccessible.”

While some Serangoon residents felt proud, a number of regular customers disagreed with the results.

“As someone who always goes there, there is absolutely no chance this is true,” one comment read.

Other netizens also took the opportunity to nominate their winner, including Alexandra Village Food Centre, Tiong Bahru Market, Chinatown Complex Market & Food Center and Golden Mile Food Centre.

Then they were the ones who thought it was the Chomp Chomp Food Center that won.

“Maybe people wanted to choose Chomp Chomp but clicked wrong,” one mistaken user joked.

Chomp Chomp is located opposite the Serangoon Garden Market and is arguably the better known of the two.

Do you think Serangoon Garden Market deserves this title?
