Victoria Police have confirmed that a 43-year-old woman who worked at the preschool but has not yet been formally identified died at the scene.

Detective Senior Sergeant Christian Von Tunk said initial investigations led them to believe the truck lost control on a bridge about 120 meters from the nursery school.

“It looks like there is contact with that bridge – we can see some debris,” he said.

“There are also signs on the left side of the road which also appear to have been struck.

“This is a tragic set of circumstances that could have been much worse…it’s one of those near misses and I don’t know how even one person died today.”

The truck driver, who is assisting police with their investigation, was taken by ambulance to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.
