RCMP warn of ‘armed and dangerous’ man in Lac La Biche area

Lac La Biche RCMP are warning the public of an “armed and dangerous” man driving a stolen vehicle in the area on Saturday.

In a statement released shortly before noon, police said the man was driving a stolen truck in the Lac La Biche area and was last seen near Plamondon, about 30 km west from Lac La Biche and 205 km northeast of Edmonton.

Police released photos of the stolen truck, describing it as a yellow 2006 Ford F350 with the word “Amarillo” on the rear passenger side and three happy faces on the grille.

“We understand how situations like this can make a community uncomfortable, but rest assured, your Alberta RCMP is working tirelessly to locate the suspect,” police said in the press release.

The warning comes after RCMP ordered a shelter-in-place order on Thursday at 11:30 p.m., asking residents of Heart Lake First Nation to lock their doors, stay inside their homes and stay away from windows . Heart Lake First Nation is located approximately 70 km northeast of Lac La Biche and 220 km northeast of Edmonton.

At the time, police said they were searching for an armed man and were devoting “a significant number of resources to apprehending this suspect.”

Shelter-in-place was called off at 3:40 a.m. Friday after police were unable to locate the man.

Police said Peter Hamelin, 39, is armed and dangerous and should not be approached.
