Fire in North Vancouver skyscraper

Flames shot out of windows and debris spilled into the street as crews battled a fire at a North Vancouver high-rise Monday afternoon.

The fire broke out on one of the upper levels of a building located near the intersection of Marine Drive and Capilano Road. Footage from the scene shows black smoke billowing from the windows of one unit, where the balcony is almost entirely engulfed.

An RCMP officer on scene told CTV News the fire was contained to the apartment where it broke out, on the 18th floor. One person was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. At this point, there is no indication that the fire is suspicious.

A number of residents were evacuated and transported by bus to a local community center to be connected with emergency social services.

According to information available online, the building was constructed in 1975 and has 471 units spread over 20 floors.

CTV News has contacted the fire department for more information. This story will be updated when a response is received.
