Sioux City School Board files decision on electric school buses

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – The Sioux City Community School District Board of Education is pushing back its decision on purchasing new electric vehicle school buses.

Last month, the board voted to approve plans for 15 new electric school buses and 15 charging stations.

Monday evening, the board received offers for both. The cost of the buses would be $5,865,000 and an additional $340,649 for 15 charging stations.

Although the district received a grant to cover costs, some board members were concerned about how they would receive that money.

So before voting to accept the bids, the board wanted to make sure the grant would cover the costs.

“Some guarantee the money is there, you know, it’s a good outcome. That’s what we’re looking to do is make sure that the Sioux City Community School District will have that money. Because, again, it was a subsidy program where they basically paid for the buses. And we agreed to do all 15 buses,” said school board president Jan George.

EV buses will be on the agenda again at the next school board meeting on November 25.
