My five to watch ahead of the 2024/25 jumping season

Ben Pauling, a Cotswold-based handler, nominates his five horses to follow this jumping season.

THE JUKEBOX MAN

This should be a top-notch entry-level hunter, we’re desperate for land, but I think he’s out of the top drawer. I don’t think it matters whether we start from two and a half or three, but I think he’s as good as we’ve had in a very long time. He’s in good shape, his work has been good and he’s an exceptional jumper.

PEAR TREE

He had a little revelation with the Rising Stars (at Wincanton on Saturday); they have become completely stupid (gallop). He traveled and jumped very well although it was very fast, even Insurrection had difficulty getting up; he unfortunately found himself in difficulty three times, a bit of a novice and simply went for it. He wasn’t beaten and I think he probably would have made it, which would have been a good first time performance. He’s a magnificent beast this year and I can’t wait to see how he does, he could be one for the Isles of Scilly (at Sandown).

DIVA MOON

It will be aimed at the best novice obstacles. She is in very good shape at the start of the season. She was laid off for two weeks but she will be back in the next few weeks and I look forward to seeing her again.

ARC SIZE

Having finally put his head back above the obstacles, I think he can move forward. He will compete in all sorts of things, at Grand Sefton he will compete in better novice handicap races, he might even become a real novice in time and I think the slightly modified National Hunt Chase is a very good target for him .

ROYSSE

Roysse was beaten but don’t worry about that, he’s like a rhino and you’ll never get him back into shape the first time. He will take part in a first obstacle at Newbury.
