We will never forgive Toei for making a major change to One Piece in Wano Arc that makes it 100 times sadder

Over the years, One piece presented her fans with some truly heartbreaking scenes. Whether it was the death of Ace, the farewell to Going Merry or the story of Nico Robin, Eiichiro Oda took every opportunity to make his audience cry.

The Wano arc One piece is not only one of the longest arcs in the series, but also emotionally overwhelming. Shimotsuki Yasuie’s sacrifice is one of the lowest points of the entire arc. But anime-only watchers have yet to discover a revelation that will make Yasuie’s sacrifice far more heartbreaking than it already is.

Toei annoyingly hid a major detail from the Wano arc in One piece Anime

Shimotsuki Yasuie is one of the most memorable characters in One pieceThe Wano arc of. He served as Daimyo of Hakumai during the Kozuki family’s reign. But after Kurozumi Orochi took control of Wano, Yasuie sacrificed himself in order to mislead the shogun’s forces. He was killed by Orochi and his forces, and all the while he was smiling.

For a long time, fans thought Yasuie was constantly smiling because he consumed the SMILE fruit. In the One piece anime, Toei animated a scene in which Yasuie took Toko’s fruit and ate it on screen. However, this is a completely original addition, since the scene never existed in the manga. In the flashback of chapter 1050, Yasuie discovers that Toko ate the SMILE fruit and claimed that he too would take a bite. However, the chapter does not show him actually eating the fruit.

at Yasuie Living Card further proves this fact as he is not stated to be a SMILE user. This implies that he never actually ate the SMILE fruit, which corresponds to chapter 1050. But episode 1077 of One piece the anime turned fans off with the addition of the fruit eating scene.

Why did Yasuie always laugh even though he didn’t eat the SMILE fruit?

Toko ate the SMILE Fruit out of hunger, which Yasuie soon discovered. He promised his adopted daughter that he would eat it too. So, in order to make her feel comfortable, he too started keeping a constant smile on his face, proving his love. At that time, the country of Wano was also full of people who had eaten the same fruit and had to laugh even in despair. Maybe Yasuie laughed just to make everyone around him feel comfortable.

The Vivre Card further states that Yasuie encouraged SMILE victims with a big smile on his own face. So even when he couldn’t allow himself to be cheerful, Yasuie simply laughed to reassure his people. Even at the moment of his death, his smile did not fade for a single moment. This makes his death scene a hundred times worse than it already is.

The only difference is that while everyone else’s smiles were artificially caused by the SMILE fruit, Yasuie smiled on his own, making it natural. But he had the will to smile despite his impending death and even when he was continually beaten down. While Yasuie’s dedication to his country and its people was already clear, this additional information adds a whole new depth to his character.

One piece the manga is available to read on Viz Media and the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
