The Jennings Creek wildfire will expand to at least 5,000 acres before reaching 100% containment

The Forest Fire Service says it expects Jennings Creek Wildfire reach at least 5,000 acres before reaching 100% containment. Today they will focus on the east side of the wildfire due to northwest wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph.

As of 8 p.m. Monday, the fire had burned 3,500 acres and was 20 percent contained. This is still a coordinated effort between New Jersey and New York fire crews.

In New Jersey, several local roads and hiking trails are closed. At least 10 structures are threatened, including two residential ones. No one had to be evacuated. Eight of the structures are in the Long Pond Ironworks Historic District.

A New York State Parks and Recreation employee was killed when a tree fell while he was battling the fire. He was 18 years old.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Wildland Fire Service says it’s unclear whether the fire started in West Milford, New Jersey, or New York.

The quarter inch of rain that fell last night was enough to give a reprieve to crews working around the clock across the state.
