Alleged SkyTrain dealers disguised fentanyl as dog treats

Two Surrey residents charged with drug and weapons offenses cannot be named due to a publication ban.

Metro Vancouver Transit Police say they found a cache of weapons and more than $36,000 in cash in the possession of a Surrey man and woman suspected of drug trafficking along the SkyTrain corridor.

In a statement released Tuesday, Transport Police spokesperson Amanda Steed said she became aware of the suspected traffickers in the spring of 2024.

Following an investigation, Surrey Transit Police and RCMP arrested the suspects and seized, among other things, fentanyl disguised as dog treats.

Also seized from the two suspects were: 3.4 kilograms of fentanyl; 28.7 grams of cocaine; five firearms, including a 9MM caliber Polymer80 “ghost” semi-automatic handgun; bulletproof vests; a diamond necklace and a diamond ring; and a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta.

“The volume of fentanyl seized was equivalent to nearly 2 million lethal doses, which is alarming given that we are in the midst of an opioid crisis in British Columbia. Having it processed using molds designed for dog treats meant this potentially deadly substance was disguised to make it appear harmless to anyone who encountered it,” Steed said.

The British Columbia Prosecution Office approved the following charges: 10 counts of trafficking a controlled substance, four counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of firearm trafficking and four counts of possession of a firearm without a license.

Steed told Glacier Media that the ages and names of the two individuals cannot be released at this time due to a publication ban on bail proceedings.

Steed said one suspect was released under strict conditions, including 24-hour house arrest, while the other remained in custody awaiting his next court appearance.
