Michelle Stock, vice-president of the Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs in Ontario, wrote to Parrish, saying it was “totally inappropriate for city property to be used and resources to be sanctioned for a vigil to celebrate the mastermind behind the October 7 attacks. (in Israel), where more than 1,200 women, children and men were brutally murdered and 254 people were kidnapped, many of whom are still being held hostage.

“We strongly urge you to use every tool available to ensure this event does not take place on city property,” Stock wrote. “Allowing this vigil to proceed as planned, honoring a genocidal madman with the blood of thousands of Israelis and Palestinians on his hands, would be an affront to the values of freedom, peace and justice that Mississaugians and all people hold dear. Ontarians. »

Richard Robertson, director of research and advocacy for B’nai Brith Canada, said those who organized the event “should be ashamed of their attempt to glorify Sinwar as a martyr and stoop so low that they disrupt the sanctity of Canada’s war dead by confusing Remembrance Day with the commemoration of heinous terrorists.

“Yahya Sinwar was a bad man and an evil terrorist,” added Robertson.

This could pose quite a challenge for Peel Regional Police, as many people outraged by the vigil have indicated they will protest. Many are wondering how it is possible that people supporting a group that the federal government considers to be a terrorist entity could use Charter rights to erect a memorial to this man.

The federal government’s website, under designated terrorist groups, states that Hamas is a “radical Islamist-nationalist terrorist organization originating from the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood… (and) uses political and violent means to pursue its goal of ‘establish an Islamic Palestinian state’. in Israel. It also claims that Hamas is responsible for “terrorist attacks against civilian and military targets… (including) operations targeting Israelis.”

But for some reason, Mississauga can’t find any reason to cancel this celebration of a terrorist’s death at city hall.
