Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps produced a superb performance as a duo to win the gold medal at Skate Canada International in Halifax on Saturday.

The reigning world pairs champions left no doubt as they scored 197.33 points to win gold. They were separated by almost eight points from finalists Ekaterina Geynish and Dmitrii Chigirev of Uzbekistan and were more than ten points ahead of Anastasia Golubeva/Hektor Giotopolous Moore of Australia, who took third place.

The duo is off to an impressive start in the ISU Grand Prix. They earned a silver medal in the first ISU Challenger Series event in September to open their season, and have now added a gold medal.

Kelly Ann Laurin and Loucas Ethier, also competing as a duo for Canada, finished eighth.

Despite the result, Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps criticized their performance following the event.

“A little disappointed with the skate. I’m not really sure what happened,” Stellato-Dudek told CBC in an interview. “We need to go back to the drawing board and only up from here.”

The action continues in Halifax on Saturday evening with ice dancing as three Canadian duos compete. Fan Favorites Piper Gilles And Paul Poirier will be joined by Marjorie Lajoie And Zachary Laghawho have already won a medal at the Halifax stage, as well as Alicia Fabbri and Paul Ayer will complete the three duos.

Sunday’s events will include men’s and women’s competitions.
