‘They would grow as people…’ Horschel sends message to Scheffler and other PGA Tour stars

Billy Horschel believes a number of other PGA Tour players, such as Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele, would “grow as people” if they took a leaf from his book and played more tournaments on the DP World Tour .

Horschel, 37, made his feelings known after traveling from Florida to Dubai to compete in this week’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

To the American’s credit, this week’s event at the Earth Course will mark his eighth of the 2024 DP World Tour season.

Horschel played in three of the four majors (he did not play in the Masters) and added the Genesis Scottish Open, BMW PGA, Dunhill Links, French Open and DP World Tour Championship to his schedule charge.

He didn’t just make up the numbers by knocking out Rory McIlroy – much to the disappointment of the majority of Wentworth fans – to win a second BMW PGA title since 2021 on the famous West Course.

The world No. 15 also came close to winning his first major title with a T2 at the 152nd Open.

This is Horschel’s best major result to date in 43 career appearances.

Meanwhile, runaway world number one Scheffler has only competed in two events outside his homeland this season: the Open (Scotland) and the Olympics (France).

Scheffler won his first Olympic gold medal in Paris this summer, which brought him to tears on the podium.

It was one of eight victories for a dominant Scheffler this season, who was deservedly crowned FedEx Cup champion.

Elsewhere, world No. 2 Schauffele, world No. 4 Collin Morikawa and world No. 6 Wyndham Clark have all played just three events in Europe: the Scottish Open, The Open and the Olympics.

Schauffele of course won the Open at Royal Troon, marking the second major of his career and the 2024 season.

Morikawa and Schauffele also both played outside the United States at the ZOZO Championship in Japan last month – although this is not a DP World Tour event – because it is a tournament that is close to their hearts due to family ties.

World number 11 Patrick Cantlay, meanwhile, only played at the Open outside the United States as he did not qualify for the Olympics.

The list seems endless: and has been for some time now — when it comes to top-tier American golfers who all prefer to fill their schedules with home events, especially considering the very inflated purses they’re all playing for on the PGA Tour these days.

But Horschel is bucking that trend, and he hopes more of his peers will follow his lead.

When asked by a reporter if he was surprised that more of his peers were not following his path and example, Horschel responded:

“Yes and no. I’ve talked about it a lot. Look, I have a different view of golf and the golf world. I grew up watching The European Tour. I grew up imagining coming here and playing these events , and even though I turned professional early in my career, I was still watching a ton of it and considering coming out to play.

“So you know, like I said, my college coach said if you want to be a world class player, a world player, you have to travel the world, ask to play well and you have to win events to consider you a world class player. I don’t blame the guys in America, that’s the decision they made, but listen, when the Tour started doing a lot better financially than the DP World, or the European Tour back then, 20 years ago changed the way guys don’t have to travel and guys are very American centric.

“Like I said, I don’t blame them, but I think they would have. I think when you think about golf, giving back and traveling around the world where people can watch and see you , you take photos with you, sign autographs, it’s a way of giving back to golf.

“And I think they would also grow as people, traveling more around the world, seeing more culture and experiencing different languages and everything.

“Look, I always encourage guys to travel and I always encourage guys to come play even if it’s just a few events a year. Ultimately, it’s their decision and they do what they do. that what’s best for them is their choice. You can’t blame them for the decision they make.

Horschel also believes that playing in more events outside the United States, including links courses in the United Kingdom, has made him “by far a better golfer” in 2024.

It also made him a better person, he believes.

Horschel continues:

“I mean, I think I’ve improved my game in conditions like playing the Open Championship and going to play Dunhill and doing it more often. I’ve become a much better person, I guarantee you, by playing understand different cultures. Try to communicate with people who may not speak English as well or speak their language as well, so try to communicate that way.

“Look, it’s made me a better person in all areas, as well as my golf game. That’s why I said I think it’s better for people to travel because you grow in as a person and it helps your golf game, but I think the most important thing is that you grow as a person.”

Horschel sits fourth in the DP World Tour rankings heading into the final event.

However, he cannot win the Race to Dubai because Rory McIlroy is too far ahead in the standings.
