Unheralded Chicago Cubs prospect makes big impression at Arizona Fall League

THE Chicago Cubs might have the best farm system in baseball heading into next year, depending on how many future stars they appear to have in their pipeline.

While that’s a good sign for future success, the Cubs are also looking to get back into the postseason right now after failing every season since the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign.

We’ll see how they go about upgrading this roster.

Although several star players are once again available on the open market, Chicago’s reluctance to spend money that would put them over the luxury tax threshold has already stopped them. voluntarily withdrawing from the draw for Juan Soto and Corbin Burnes.

Maybe they could consider trading some top prospects to get a return that upgrades them to the Major League level, and if that’s the case, they’re spoiled for choice.

One of the latest to emerge is Jonathon Long.

Although he’s a little unknown compared to the other members of the farm since he’s ranked No. 30 in their pipeline, the 22-year-old is having a solid performance in the Arizona Fall League and was named one of the best players of week 5. by Joe Trezza of MLB.com after going 6 for 15 with two doubles, two homers and five RBIs.

“The only AFL player to hit more than one home run this week, Long had yards in back-to-back games on Nov. 5 and 6, giving the third baseman six long balls in 16 games this fall. Entering Week 6, he is tied for second-most home runs in the Fall League and hitting .348 with a solid 1.110 OPS,” he wrote.

This is a monster show for the Cubs and this kid.

Outfield is an already locked-in position group, not only at the Major League level, but also in the minors, with seven others ranked in the top 30.

This could ultimately turn Long into an infielder as he only played 17 games in left field while getting 75 at first base and 30 at third.

Selected in the ninth round of the 2023 draft, he put together an impressive first full season of professional baseball last year with a .283/.391/.461 slash line, 17 home runs and 70 RBIs across two levels that included double- ONE.

Long appears to have a bright future.

It will be interesting to see what Chicago ultimately decides to do with the emerging prospect, but after this Arizona Fall League performance, he will certainly be viewed internally much differently than he otherwise would have been.
