Swift Current Broncos show resilience in shootout win over Moose Jaw Warriors

Broncos tie three times before earning a 4-3 win at Moose Jaw Events Center

MOOSEJAWTODAY.COM – The Moose Jaw Warriors just couldn’t find a way to finish off the Swift Current Broncos in the Western Hockey League on Tuesday night.

Despite taking leads three times in the competition, the Warriors were unable to hold any of them and lost by a 4-3 decision in a shootout at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.

Moose Jaw dropped to 4-13-2-1 and remains in last place in the Eastern Conference, while Swift Current improved to 12-6-0-0 and found itself tied for leads the East division with the Saskatoon Blades with the second-best record in the Conference.

The opening period went back-and-forth throughout the first 10 minutes, as Warriors goalie Jackson Unger and Broncos goalie Reid Dyck made a handful of saves to keep the game scoreless. aim.

The Warriors would be first to break through with 6:01 left in the opening period. Ethan Hughes forced a turnover and escaped down his wing before placing a high-range shot to take a 1-0 lead.

This advantage would last for the rest of the period and for the fourth time this season, Moose Jaw had the lead in the first 20 minutes.

Things remained mostly the same at the start of the second half, with each team getting a handful of chances but few standout scoring chances. Unger was the busier goalie, though, especially after 10 minutes as the Broncos began to see more and more pressure in the Warriors zone.

That zone time paid off with 4:22 left in the period, and it was a bit lucky.

Unger appeared to have the puck covered in his crease, but Brady Birnie was able to get it free, and Grayson Burzynski was in the right place at the right time to bring it home and tie the game 1-1.

The Warriors would regain the lead 20 seconds into the third.

Brayden Yager broke his wing and appeared to get too deep into the zone to get a quality shot, but instead put the puck over Dyck’s shoulder just above the goal line.

Swift Current got that one back three minutes later. A turnover at the blue line led to the Broncos going on a short break, ending when Luke Mistelbacher found Carlin Dezainde with a back pass and entry into the open net.

Moose Jaw received its first power gain of the game with 6:23 gone, and they took advantage.

Aiden Ziprick did the honors by hitting a shot from the left faceoff circle that eluded Dyck.

The lead lasted only a few minutes, as Mistelbacher took a hit to set up Clarke Caswell, who came in on a breakaway and beat Unger with a shot to the high glove side.

The rest of the rules and overtime resolved nothing and the competition ended in a shootout.

There, things went for five scoreless rounds before Birnie slipped a five-hole shot over Unger, giving the Broncos the 4-3 victory.

Unger had another busy game and finished with 42 saves, while Dyck stopped 25 shots.

Both teams will start again Wednesday evening in Swift Current, with puck drop at 7 p.m. The Warriors’ next home game is Thursday, November 21 when the Saskatoon Blades take on the Moose Jaw Events Centre.
