Hindu temple in Canada cancels consular event due to ‘high and imminent’ threat of protests

Canada’s Brampton Triveni Temple canceled a consular event after Canadian police warned it of an “extremely high and imminent” threat level of violent protests.

The Life Certificate event, organized by the Consulate General of India in Toronto, was scheduled for November 17 at the temple premises. It was one of several consulate camps responsible for issuing life certificates for retirement.

On Monday, temple officials said the event was canceled due to “official intelligence from Peel Regional Police indicating that there is an extremely high and imminent threat level of violent demonstrations.”

“…We must make the appropriate decision to cancel to ensure the safety of Brampton Triveni Mandir devotees, community visitors and the general public,” temple authorities said in a statement.

“We are deeply saddened that Canadians no longer feel safe visiting Hindu temples in Canada,” the text adds.

Temple authorities have asked Peel police to respond to threats circulating against the temple and provide security guarantees to the Canadian Hindu community and the general public.

The cancellation came almost a week after protesters carrying Khalistan flags clashed with worshipers at a Hindu Sabha temple and disrupted an event co-hosted by temple authorities and the Indian consulate in Brampton.

Meanwhile, Peel Regional Police released a statement Tuesday clarifying that they had not received threats against any places of worship.

In a statement released to X, Peel Regional Police said they are aware of community concerns, particularly in places of worship, regarding protests and perceived threats.

However, she wishes to clarify that “we have not received any direct threats against any place of worship in the Peel region”.

“Peel Regional Police have increased their presence around places of worship to reassure the public. Additionally, we actively engaged with community leaders, organizations and local stakeholders to address security concerns and ease tensions.

As part of these efforts, Peel Regional Police have been in contact with the Consul General of India, as well as places of worship and community centers to work collaboratively to mitigate risk to the community . Given current tensions in the community and a common interest in maintaining public safety, organizers agreed that the consular camps would be postponed to a later date to allow tensions to ease and limit any negative impact on the community,” the statement said.

Last week, India’s Consulate General in Toronto announced it was canceling some of its planned consular camps after Canadian security authorities expressed their failure to provide minimal security protection to its organizers.

Following protests at the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton on November 3, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said New Delhi remained “deeply concerned” about the safety and security of Indian nationals in Canada.

India condemned the attack, hoping that those engaging in violence “will be prosecuted.”

Relations between India and Canada came under strain following allegations by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in September last year of “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the extremist’s assassination of Khalistan Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

New Delhi rejected Trudeau’s accusations, calling them “absurd.”

Nijjar, a Canadian citizen, has been designated a terrorist by India.

India maintains that the main issue between the two countries is Canada giving space to pro-Khalistan elements operating with impunity from Canadian soil.
