Youth programs in agriculture strengthened with grants

The provincial and federal governments distribute funds to Alberta 4-H to help promote careers in agriculture.

Agriculture Minister RJ Sigurdson made the announcement Tuesday in Calgary, saying that by mid-century, global demand for food could increase by 40 to 50 percent or more.

“We know Alberta is a net exporter. We produce the highest quality food products in the world,” he said.

“We know that as demand continues to increase, our business partners will look to Alberta as a solution.”

The grant will provide $731,000 for three of the courses the organization offers to youth.

They include Introduction to 4-H, Farm Safety and Mental Health and the Spring Senior Symposium.

Officials say the mental health program is new and offers training in equine therapy.

Funding was provided through a partnership between the federal and provincial governments. Canadian Partnership for Sustainable Agriculture Program.
