Kitchener woman faces charges in fatal Markham crash

A Kitchener woman allegedly involved in a wrong-way accident which left one person dead and two other people seriously injured, including herself, faces charges of impaired driving and dangerous driving.

York Regional Police (YRP) were called to the area of Highway 7 East and Reesor Road in Markham at 7:45 p.m. on November 11 for reports of a collision.

Investigators believe the driver of an SUV crossed the center line and struck a hatchback traveling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the car, a 68-year-old man who was not identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

His passenger was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police said the driver of the SUV, identified as Carolyn Nielsen, a 42-year-old Kitchener resident, was arrested and also transported to hospital with serious injuries.

She has since been charged with dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, impaired driving causing death and impaired driving causing bodily harm.

“Investigators are asking any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police, as well as anyone who may have dash cam footage of the area at the time of the collision, to come forward,” said YRP in a press release.
