— Very good initial speed and burst to close space and make significant first contact with defenders in zone play and on back blocks

— Can hook shadows, make passes on combo blocks, and move into the drive phase late in rep to direct and widen defenders out of lanes

— Takes adequate angles on rises but closes space very quickly to square up, lock down and keep slow-release backers off the ball

– Shifts his weight fluidly and redirects it towards the mirror and slows counter movements on his face

— Can bypass power moves in pass protection by using jump sets to clear the rusher’s trail, gain quick control, and slowly die into his anchor.

— Below-average mass, length and play strength regularly leave him in a bind and force him open on the basic blocks.

— Will be lifted, pressed and backed into its anchor against the bull rush of head rushers

— 4-star recruit from the 2020 class, by 247Sports

— Two-way starter in high school at offensive tackle and defensive line

— Letterman for four years in track and field, three years in basketball and Iowa state champion in the shot put and discus as a junior

Logan Jones is a three-year starter at center and first inside in Iowa offensive coordinator Tim Lester’s run-heavy scheme (64-36 run-pass split), zone-based with gap principles sprinkled. Jones has a sawn frame with a lean, athletic build, very good athletic ability and adequate playing strength.

Jones has very good initial quickness and rushed to close space and make the first meaningful contact with defenders in the running game. He is able to constantly pass his hat and hook glasses on the front side, outrun his man combinations, line up targets on the back blocks and quickly close space on climbs to give him a chance to meet donors. His short arms and mediocre mass let him scramble and open base blocks, and he takes erratic angles on upswings that quick release backers avoid too easily.

In pass protection, Jones is a loose, fluid player who can compete with sub-package rushers and die slowly against defensive tackles using jump sets, but he is too easily stacked, guarded at the end fingers from bigger rushers and got back into the pocket. .

Overall, Jones is a very athletic center prospect who has shown steady improvement on film in his first season in a new program. Still, his short arms and average playing strength cap his ceiling, making him more of a developmental prospect without positional or scheme versatility.

GRADE: 6.4 (Development prospects — 5th round)
