Thousands of diverted hydromorphone pills seized in RCMP drug bust in Burnaby

Charges have been laid against four people arrested in connection with an alleged interprovincial drug ring being investigated by the Burnaby RCMP Drug and Organized Crime Section.

Four people have been arrested and large quantities of drugs seized after a four-month investigation by Burnaby RCMP into an alleged interprovincial drug ring this summer.

The investigation resulted in drug seizures at two residential properties in Coquitlam and Surrey on Aug. 7, according to a news release issued Wednesday.

Three men and a woman, all aged between 25 and 35, were arrested, according to police.

In addition to $80,000 in cash, agents also seized 9,555 suspected hydromorphone pills; 1.15 kilograms of suspected cocaine; 25.51 grams of suspected ketamine; and 12,547 suspected alprazolam pills.

Most of the hydromorphone pills are believed to be diverted prescription pills, while several hundred are believed to be counterfeit and contain fentanyl, according to police.

The group allegedly shipped large quantities of drugs as far as Manitoba and the Yukon, as well as locally.

“Stopping the flow of highly addictive diverted prescription opioids, as well as other drugs that contribute to overdose deaths, is a priority for our team,” said Sgt. Randy Mortensen of the Burnaby RCMP Drugs and Organized Crime Section said in the release. “This seizure redirected a large amount of deadly drugs away from our streets.”

According to the release, two of those arrested in this case already face drug trafficking charges related to other investigations.

Burnaby RCMP will release charges related to the August search warrants once the ongoing investigation is completed.
