Razorbacks take methodical approach to improving shooting

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas fans are still getting used to all of coach John Calipari’s rants, but one of his best involves his team’s slow start shooting the three.

“You don’t have to do them all,” Calipari said. “You can’t miss them all.”

Well, through two games, Arkansas didn’t miss them all, but they came pretty close, making just 23.1% of their threes (9 for 39). The Hogs rank second in the SEC behind Vanderbilt and 346th nationally entering the season.

Assistant coach Kenny Payne sees better results on the horizon and hopes the Hogs can translate shot making from practice to games.

“You could be the best shooter in the world,” Payne said. “It won’t go in unless you pull it the same way you do in practice.”

Payne also noted that shooting a three is a complete operation with several elements, not just the shot itself. He wants the Hogs to continue to be more efficient in the three-way process and the shots will follow.

“This is what happens before the shot,” Payne said. “If the ball moves and it’s hot and it goes in and hits the wings, then it’s an extra pass and you shoot the ball in rhythm, as opposed to if the ball stays on the perimeter and you shoot it , you” more than likely shoot a contested three.

Arkansas’ next opponent, the Troy Trojans, aren’t much better behind the arc, shooting 30.4 percent (14-for-46). They also draw a slightly higher volume than the Hogs.

Tip-off against Troy is scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. from inside Bud Walton Arena. The game will be broadcast on SEC+.
